Things to Do in Monopoli – The Magic of the Centro Storico

The best part of Monopoli is definitely its Centro Storico (Old Town). To begin with, it’s a gorgeous labyrinth of whitewashed buildings. They burst with color from potted plants, hanging laundry, and bright green shutters. Honestly, get lost! With every step, each twist and turn reveals a tiny piazza or a picturesque archway.

Next, wander the alleys: just stroll and let your feet guide you. Along the way, notice the little details. Eventually, you’ll reach the Chiesa di San Salvatore, one of the town’s oldest churches. It is tucked right on the edge of the sea.
After that, embrace some piazza life. Find a seat in Piazza Giuseppe Garibaldi for an afternoon Aperol Spritz. Enjoy a divine scoop of gelato. Naturally, it’s the perfect spot for some classic Italian people-watching!
Finally, don’t miss the Porto Antico (Old Port). Monopoli is a town truly born of the sea. As a result, the Old Port feels like its beating heart. This is my favorite photo spot!

Be sure to see the charming towns nearby; Alberobello, Polignano a Mare, Locorotundo, Lecce and Ostuni. Additionally, Matera (in the region of Basilicata) is a must see! If you’re thinking of a personal or group yoga retreat, discover a Puglian retreat near Manduria.

Monopoli is a town truly born of the sea, and the Porto Antico (Old Port) is its beating heart. This is my favorite photo spot!

  • The Gozzi Boats: You’ll see the traditional gozzi fishing boats. They are painted in vibrant shades of blue and red. The boats bob gently in the clear water. This presents a perfect contrast to the old stone walls. You can even see the fish swimming below!
  • Castello Carlo V: Walk along the defensive wall to the imposing 16th-century Castello Carlo V. It juts right into the Adriatic and offers spectacular views of the coastline.

Where to Dip Your Toes

Monopoli

Of course, you can’t come to a seaside town without hitting the beach! Fortunately, Monopoli has lovely coves right near the old town:

  • Cala Porta Vecchia: A small, sandy beach right next to the city walls—perfect for a quick, refreshing dip.
  • Porto Rosso: A bit further south, this sandy cove is great for a relaxing morning swim in the turquoise Adriatic Sea.

🍝 Taste of Puglia

Monopoli

The food here is simple, fresh, and unbelievably delicious. To start, you must try the local seafood, which is often fried or grilled to perfection. In addition, don’t miss the regional pasta specialty, orecchiette (little ear-shaped pasta). Finally, don’t forget a glass of local Primitivo wine to cap off your evening!

Beyond the food, Monopoli is often suggested as a perfect base for exploring Puglia. Conveniently, it puts you close to other gems like the trulli houses of Alberobello. or the cliffside town of Polignano a Mare. Matera

Matera – The Magic of Matera

The Enchanting “City of the Sassi”

Nestled in the rolling hills of southern Italy, at the edge of Puglia, lies the enchanting city of Matera. Just a 45-minute drive from Bari airport, you’ll behold a mesmerizing city. It feels like stepping back in time—way back. Known as the “City of the Sassi,” Matera is home to a series of ancient cave dwellings. Amazingly, they are carved directly into the mountainside. Moreover, its history stretches over 7,000 years! It’s no wonder that Matera is often described as one of the most unique and awe-inspiring cities in the world. If fact it is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Matera

Great news! Neos Airlines is now running non-stop New York to Bari flights. Flights will operate from June till October. Make your vacation amazing and visit these other beautiful towns: Polignano a Mare, Alberobello, Locorotondo, Ostuni, Lecce and the winery in Manduria.

Matera’s History Comes to Life

matera

Wandering through Matera’s narrow, winding streets, you can’t help but feel like you’re on the set of a historical movie. The homes, once humble dwellings for locals. They have been lovingly restored and now house chic boutique hotels, cozy restaurants, and charming cafes. You will find delightful nooks and crannies with charming venues boasting amazing views.

Matera’s stunning landscapes have played a starring role in many films. These include No Time to Die, Quantum of Solace, The Passion of the Christ, and Wonder Woman.

Why We Loved Matera

There’s something truly magical about Matera. Whether it’s breathtaking views, rich history, or amazing food, this city has a way of stealing your heart. Furthermore, the atmosphere feels timeless. You get the sense that you’re walking through a place that’s been shaped by the hands of generations before you.

Matera’s rise as a cultural hub is evident in the growing number of galleries, craft shops, and music festivals. Moreover, the people here are incredibly warm and welcoming. We absolutely loved Matera, and can’t wait to return!

In Matera, you’ll encounter a stunning bronze sculpture at nearly every turn. It is an image of a globe with an olive tree sprouting from its peak. This symbolizes peace and resilience. This iconic sculpture can be found throughout the city. The original stands proudly near the Church of San Francesco d’Assisi.

Matera: Exploring the Upper and Lower Sassi

Whether you’re wandering through the cobblestone streets of the Sassi Barisano (the upper part), or you’re descending to the Sassi Caveoso (the lower part), you’ll be captivated by Matera’s timeless beauty.

Matera

The Lower Sassi (Sassi Caveoso)

Sassi Caveoso is the older, more rugged side of Matera. Ancient, cave-like dwellings are still nestled into the rocky hillside. This beautiful city retains much of its raw, historic charm, waiting for us to explore. The streets here are winding and steep, and many of the original cave homes still stand. Indeed, Matera offers an intimate glimpse into life as it was centuries ago. In fact, we took a wonderful walking tour which includes entry into an original cave house.

The Upper Sassi (Sassi Barisano)

The more modern part of Matera is Sassi Barisano. It feels more polished, with wider streets and flat land. It boasts more shops, and greater accessibility. Nevertheless, it still retains a distinct charm, with stylish accommodations and trendy cafes.

The upper and lower parts of Matera are in walking distance of each other. Exploring both areas on foot is one of the highlights of visiting the city. The distance between the two parts isn’t far at all—just a few minutes by foot. But, you will be navigating some hills and staircases as you go.

Getting from the Upper to the Lower SassiHow Long Will It Take?

Walking from the top (Sassi Barisano) to the bottom (Sassi Caveoso) usually takes about 5 to 10 minutes, depending on your pace and how many photo stops you make along the way! It’s a great chance to take in the stunning architecture and landscape.

In essence, you’ll be doing a lot of walking. Nevertheless, the short distances and the beautiful surroundings make it a truly rewarding experience. The city’s compact size and unique layout mean you’ll always have something new to discover.

Matera, Italy Travel Tips

A referendum is in place to allow the Matera to officially become part of Puglia. It is now in the region of Basilicata, on the edge of Puglia.

  • Best Time to Visit: Spring and Fall are ideal for avoiding the summer heat, and the city is less crowded. However, Matera’s chilly months have a unique charm, with the mist rolling off the cliffs adding to its mystical aura.
  • Getting Around: While Matera is small, it’s hilly! Wear comfortable shoes for all the walking and stair-climbing you’ll be doing. A good pair of sneakers or sturdy sandals will go a long way.
  • Local Cuisine: Don’t miss trying Pane di Matera (Matera bread), a delicious, crusty bread unique to the region. Pair it with Caciocavallo (a local cheese) and some Lucanica sausage for a true taste of the area. Oh, and the focaccia—you’ll dream about it!
  • Stay in a Cave Hotel: For the ultimate Matera experience, book a night in a cave hotel. There are several charming options where you can sleep in a room carved right into the stone. These hotels offer a blend of ancient charm and modern luxury.

Ready to discover the magic of Matera? Pack your bags and let this ancient city with its stunning Sassi take your breath away! I really can’t wait to return!

Manduria FI

Manduria Italy and the Wonderful Winery

Manduria Italy, a town in Puglia, has history, culture and most notably, exceptional wine. Located in the “heel” of Italy, Manduria boasts a rich agricultural heritage, with sun-drenched vineyards stretching across its fertile land. The small town itself is quiet during the day but lively at night. It offers a respite on the way to beaches or wineries. My feeling is that it will eventually grow to become a popular spot since it is right in the middle of Primitivo vineyards, olive oil production and the gorgeous natural beaches of Campomarino!

In the center of Manduria is the ‘Calverio of Manduria’. It is the work of Giuseppe Renato Greco, who created it entirely of recycled materials during the 19th century. It is an artistic representation of the hill where Jesus Christ was crucified.

Manduria Italy Wineries

The undeniable star of Manduria Italy is Primitivo di Manduria, a robust red wine celebrated for its intense fruit flavors and full body. It’s delicious! This grape thrives in the region’s hot, dry climate, yielding wines that are both powerful and elegant. Numerous wineries dot the landscape. These wineries offer immersive experiences for visitors, from guided tours of vineyards and cellars to tasting sessions showcasing the diverse expressions of Primitivo.

Masseria Cuturi

Masseria Cuturi is an absolute gem, nestled within over 600 acres of breathtaking land in Manduria Italy. This stunning estate is home to expansive vineyards, olive groves, and a serene forest, all surrounding a beautifully restored Masseria. The main building serves as both a winery and a beautifully decorated hotel, offering guests an unparalleled experience. Alberobello Puglia

Alberobello the Alluring ‘Capital of the Trulli’

Alberobello, a place so unique it feels like stepping into a fairytale! This town is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is famous for its concentration of iconic, conical-roofed houses known as trulli. It’s a small, charming village with narrow lanes. Gently sloping hills add to its charm. It is one of the most popular destinations in Puglia. Alberobello draws visitors from all over to admire its distinctive cluster of picturesque trulli homes. For the best experience—and the best photos—visit early in the morning, when the streets are still quiet.

Great news! Neos Airlines is now running non-stop New York to Bari flights. Flights will operate from June till October.

Alberobello’s Magic Trulli

Alberobello Trulli

These distinctive dry-stone houses are built without mortar and topped with grey, cone-shaped roofs. These roofs are often painted with mysterious symbols. They are absolutely fascinating. The trulli date back to the 1400’s. You will see them sprinkled around Puglia, but Alberbello has the largest cluster. Due to their excellent condition and large amount, Alberobello Italy became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996. Trulli are built with stone only, no mortar. Therefore, a round structure is the best for self-support. The pointed roof supports itself atop the structure. The reason for not using mortar was to avoid paying taxes. Structures can easily be disassembled before the tax man came!
Note: Trulli = Plural | Trullo = Singular

Alberobello

When you arrive in town on Via Indipendenza, there are two big parking lots on the right. A few steps after you will find Alberobello’s main piazza, Largo Martellotta. Here, you will find restaurants, shops and market tents. Yum, the local tarelli (pictured below) is delicious. Make sure you buy some to take home. There is a vendor here that has bushels of different flavors. They are small, crunchy bread-rounds that originate from the Bari region of Puglia. This market has the best tasting ones!

Across from the piazza you will find the Alberobello trulli zone with artisan shops and restaurants sprinkled all about. It is really a beautiful area that has about 1,000 trulli built next to each other. You can find many types of trulli here. Trulli bars, restaurants, shops and even a church, Chiesa di St. Antonio. There are many wonderful homemade items and foods to purchase, as well as souvenirs.

Alberobello

Indeed, this town gets very crowded in the afternoon. This summer the throngs of people really surprised me! Think Disney! In spite of this, it is worth a visit. Go in the early morning or evening for dinner so that you avoid all the day-trippers. Alberbello, Puglia is a small village and you only need about two to three hours to see it all.

Lecce makes the perfect base for exploring the stunning beaches on the Ionian and Adriatic coasts of Salento. But trust me—you’ll want to spend plenty of time simply soaking in this city’s golden glow. The experience will amaze you! You’ll fall in love with it just as I did. Its beauty and uniqueness truly stand out. I suggest staying for 3 to 4 days so you can experience all its splendor. That amount of time also lets you immerse yourself in the vibrant culture and enjoy the delicious local cuisine.

Alvino Suite & Breakfast was perfect for us! It offered a sweeping view from the Amphitheater to the Piazza Sant’Oronzo from our balcony. Our room was huge and beautiful. Furthermore, directly downstairs is a delicious Cafe Alvino. The perfect spot for a complimentary breakfast. Get yourself a Pasticciotto Leccese – a famous custard cream-filled pastry of southern Puglia.

Ostuni

Ostuni Italy is Outstanding!

Ciao amici! Wait until you lay eyes on Ostuni, the dazzling queen of the Itria Valley! Affectionately nicknamed La Città Bianca (The White City) this town is a breathtaking vision. A brilliant cascade of whitewashed houses spilling down a hilltop. Colorful flowers and green succulent plants make for a visually stunning appearance in contrast to white buildings. I loved Ostuni- it is one of my favorite towns in Puglia! The best thing to do in Ostuni is simply to get lost! The Centro Storico (Old Town) is a medieval masterpiece built deliberately without a plan, meant to confuse invaders. You can spend hours wandering its maze of winding cobblestone streets, where every turn feels like a hidden treasure.

Ostuni – Roam the Gleaming White City

Wander the Alleys: Lose yourself in the tiny, winding alleys, staircases, and hidden courtyards. Every turn reveals a new pop of color. There are cozy cafés tucked into corners to breezy terraces serving up local bites and colorful cocktails. There are also unexpected glimpses of the deep blue Adriatic Sea in the distance.
The Arco Scoppa: You have to see this elegant stone archway. It connects the Bishop’s Palace to the old Seminary. It’s one of the town’s most iconic and photogenic landmarks!

You could be sipping an aperitivo. Or you might be simply soaking it all in. The views stretch endlessly across olive-dotted hills all the way to the sea. Ostuni Puglia is a dream – definitely worth a visit when in this region!

Great news! Neos Airlines is now running non-stop New York to Bari flights! They are in operation from June till October.

Ostuni

Ostuni is an incredible place for both unique stays and authentic, delicious dining. Here are some top recommendations for places that capture the spirit of La Città Bianca.

Ostuni at night!

Piazza della Libertà: This main square is the bustling hub, perfect for grabbing a morning coffee at Caffè Centrale or admiring the towering Colonna di Sant’Oronzo. In the evening it is filled with strollers, shoppers and late diners. Ostuni becomes abuzz with activity at night. Enjoy the atmosphere at local cafes and restaurants. You can have aperitivo and enjoy music and drinks all hours of the day. In addition, you’ll find mix of fashion, home decor, and gifts you won’t find anywhere else.

Beautiful Ostuni
Via Vito Tamborino

Directly off Piazza Liberta, follow the sloping steps down to Via Vito Tamborino. It consists of a piazza with plenty of shops and eateries. You’ll hear music in the air and see a beautiful view of the sea.

Duomo di Ostuni
Basilica Concattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta

Ostuni Cathedral: Is the beautiful 15th-century Cathedral of Santa Maria dell’Assunzione with its exquisite rose window. It is an easy short walk from Piazza Liberta. There is a little square in front that sometimes has a live band. And always has tables for the gelato shop next to it. There is also a beautiful arch opposite the church, making the scenery simply lovely!

Getting to Ostuni

Ostuni is only a 30 minute drive from the Bari airport.
I definitely recommend renting a car. The area is very easy to drive around and towns are close to each other. Additionally, you will always find parking nearby.
Puglia is a wonderful region of Italy. You will fall in love with it, as I did. It is truly beautiful and unique. I suggest staying at least a week. This will allow you to see all its splendor. It will also let you soak up the wonderful culture and enjoy the delicious local cuisine.

Be sure to see the charming towns nearby; Alberobello, Polignano a Mare, Locorotundo, Lecce and Monopoli. Additionally, Matera (in the region of Basilicata) is a must see! If you’re thinking of a personal or group yoga retreat, discover a Puglian retreat near Manduria.

Ostuni Puglia – Tastes of the White City

Local Cuisine and Fantastic Restaurants
First, the food here is honest, fresh, and delicious. Thanks to the produce grown in the surrounding countryside and the Local Olive Oil. The area is famous for its ancient olive trees. Some of which are a thousand years old!
You must try the Orecchiette Pasta. Look for the traditional Apulian “little ears” pasta, often served with turnip tops (cime di rapa).

Second, mashed fava bean puree and chicory is a rich and flavorful dish – I really loved it.
Next, a Bombette. YUM! A thin sliced pork cutlet topped with breadcrumbs and cheese. Then rolled and baked into a Bombette. Delish!
Finally, Stracciatella is a traditional Italian cheese which is the creamy center of burrata cheese. It is extremely popular in Puglia and is amazingly delicious! We are crazy about it!
Ostuni is a wonderful place especially late at night to wander narrow alleys and see all that is happening. Do yourself a favor and begin the evening with a delicious meal!

Osteria del Tempo Perso

Osteria del Tempo Perso

Dining in a Cave: For an unforgettable romantic experience, check out Osteria Del Tempo Perso. Book a table in their stunning cave room for a memorable dining experience! This is the absolute best restaurant we had the pleasure of dining at. Everything about it was fantastic! The food was delicious, the atmosphere divine and the staff was wonderful. You must make reservations, especially in July and August.

Dish Restaurant Ostuni

Dish Restaurant offers a stunning terrace with a panoramic view of the old town. Therefore, making it the perfect spot to enjoy a memorable dining experience. The view alone is worth the visit, but the great music and exceptional food truly make this place stand out.

Osteria Piazzetta Cattedrale: Located near the Cathedral, offering high-quality traditional cuisine and specializing in fresh seafood, perfect for a romantic dinner.

Antico Borgo Bristot

Antico Borgo Bistrot is a great hot spot for eats and drinks. This unique eatery is built into zig-zag multi-level steps. The view overlooks the countryside to the sea. It is the perfect place for an aperitivo. Moreover the food is delicious! Everything we had at our table of four was excellent. I would say that it is best for lunch or a light dinner. No reservations are accepted, first come, first served.

Ostuni Italy Drinks

Bar Perso

Bar Perso – We loved the seats conveniently located on the steps of the alleyway. Additionally, there are a few tables lower down. All have stunning views. Very cute place with good drinks and music.

Riccardo Caffe

Riccardo Caffè in Ostuni is a great spot for an aperitivo. We just love outdoor seating with lounge chairs on the steps.

Ostuni Italy Hotels

This is an Ostuni Hotel that I highly recommend. It is a wonderful place where we stayed for two nights; Vico Bianco Raro Villas. We had the Superior King Room # 5 (La Terra Junior Suite) with terrace. It definitely exceeded my expectations. I absolutely loved Vico Bianco. Not only was our room, terrace and bathroom terrific. But so was the rooftop lounge area, patios and lobby. The included breakfast was excellent – as well as the staff! Moreover, the location is perfect – just steps away from Piazza Liberta.

In summary, to fully explore the many wonderful restaurants, cafes, bars and shops, I recommend spending 2 days in Ostuni. Still, the whole city can be seen in a day. This makes it perfect to combine with Locorotundo, Monopoli, Polignano a Mare, Aberobello and Lecce. as well as other areas in Puglia.
Ostuni Italy is more than just a beautiful facade; it’s a feeling—a perfect blend of ancient history, dazzling beauty, and relaxed Southern Italian life.
