Capri Calling: Sun, Sea & Sweet Italian Dreams
Capri Italy is not only the jewel of the Amalfi Coast, but arguably of all Southern Italy. Its magic includes jaw-dropping natural beauty, a chic vibe and amazing world class shopping. Have you ever dreamed of stepping directly into a vintage Italian postcard? The lemons are the size of footballs, the water is an impossible shade of turquoise, and every street smells like jasmine and high fashion. Let me save you the suspense: Capri is that dream come to life.
To discover Capri’s charms, please consider staying a few nights. Therefore, you will have the time to explore beyond the port area and Piazza Umberto. These areas are quite crowded with day-trippers until late afternoon. After the ferries leave, it is the best time to explore this spectacular town.
Arriving at Capri by Ferry
TIPS: If you have luggage, call or email your hotel a day before. You can arrange a luggage transfer from the pier to your hotel for a small charge. The port area is very crowded in the summer. The fastest way to arrive in the town of Capri from the port is to take the funicular up the steep hill. The funicular is located right in front of Marina Grand. This cable railway connects the port (Marina Grande) directly to Piazza Umberto I (the Piazzetta) in Capri town. Moreover, the Capri funicular features a contactless Tap & Go system, allowing you to skip the ticket office and pay directly at the turnstiles with a credit or debit card. Each passenger must tap their own separate card or phone. If you are traveling in a group with only one card, you must buy physical tickets at the ticket office.
Capri has so many beautiful nooks and crannies, cute little shops, and terrific restaurants. Surely, this is all worth anchoring your yacht in its sparkling water for a few days! LOL Let’s dream a little! Of course you can visit Capri on a budget too! I recently traded reality for a few days of pure dolce vita on this legendary island. I’m still convinced I left a piece of my soul somewhere on this gorgeous island. Here is the ultimate playbook from my sun-soaked Caprese adventure!
Checking In: Hotel Gatto Bianco
First things first: basecamp. I stayed at the midrange, iconic Hotel Gatto Bianco, and it felt like stepping into a hidden oasis. Located just steps from the buzzing center of Capri town, this place manages to be both incredibly central and blissfully quiet.
With its signature white-washed walls, vibrant bougainvillea, as well as beautiful hand-painted majolica tiles, it oozes mid-century island charm. Fun fact: Jackie Kennedy used to hang out here! The staff treated me like family, and waking up to breakfast in their sunlit garden was the perfect way to kick off every morning. Yes, I would move in permanently if they’d let me.
Capri’s Chic Shopping
Sooner or later, you must check out Capri’s gorgeous shopping epicenter. Indeed, the absolute best and most famous, shopping street here is Via Camerelle. This is known as the island’s Rodeo Drive. It offers the highest concentration of ultra-luxury designer boutiques, fine jewelers, and exclusive Italian fashion houses. It is a terrific place to window shop and enjoy a delicious lunch.
Sun, Myth, & Sailors: Scoglio delle Sirene
Meanwhile, you can’t go to Capri Italy without paying respects to the sea. The Scoglio delle Sirene is a magical place, located in one of the most charming areas of Capri: Marina Piccola. We walked there from town and stopped many times to take pictures of the spectacular views. The lido offers a private and welcoming beach, unique in the world for its location and beauty. Although the beach club is on the rocks, it is equipped with sunbeds, deckchairs, towels and umbrellas.
Honestly? Sitting there on the rocks, baking in the Italian sun with the dramatic Faraglioni rocks in the distance, I totally loved it.
To make the day completely perfect, we hired a small boat right from the shoreline. Skipping the crowded main docks and hopping onto a boat straight from the beach felt like peak luxury. We zipped across the crystal-clear water, and went right through the stone archway of the Faraglioni. We explored hidden sea caves where the water glows from the inside out. It is an absolute non-negotiable if you visit!
Capri Culinary Chronicles: Pizza, Pasta, and Pizazz
Let’s be real—half the reason we travel to Italy is to eat our body weight in carbs. Capri absolutely delivered on the foodie front. Here is how my dinner marathons broke down:
The Restaurants
- Ristorante Pulalli (The Clocktower View): Tucked right next to the famous clocktower in the Piazzetta, this spot is a hidden gem with a small terrace that offers the best people-watching on the island. I had a plate of Scialatielli pasta here that made me want to cry tears of pure joy, all while watching the island’s glamorous evening crowd mingle below.
- Ristorante Villa Verde (The Energy): If you want a side of high-energy fun with your dinner, Villa Verde is the place. It’s a favorite for celebrities, and it’s easy to see why. The open-air terrace has an amazing vibe, the wood-fired pizzas are spectacular, and the atmosphere is loudly, proudly, and beautifully Italian. We had so much fun here & loved it!
- Aurora (The Legend): Saving the most glamorous for last! Aurora is Capri’s oldest restaurant, and it is the place to see and be seen. I treated myself to their famous, ultra-thin Pizza all’Acqua (a secret recipe from the 1950s) and a glass of crisp local wine. The service was impeccable, the crowd was effortlessly chic, and the food was absolute perfection. Ask for an outside table.
Final Thoughts
Capri isn’t just a place; it’s a mood. It’s the sound of scooters buzzing down narrow roads, the taste of fresh limoncello, and the feeling of the Mediterranean breeze on your face. It might be a playground for the rich and famous, but its natural beauty and warm hospitality belong to anyone willing to get lost in its winding streets.

I’ve found that the least expensive choice (train) takes the longest time. Furthermore, it could be the most crowded and inconvenient with luggage. I find that the moderately priced option (ferry) is an easy way to go. The fastest and most comfortable (private driver) is the most expensive. In my opinion, there are things worth splurging on, and things worth skimping. Safety, time, and convenience may be worth the splurge for you.
The least expensive way is to take the train to Sorrento. From the Naples airport, take the free shuttle to Napoli Centrale Garibaldi Train Station. Go to the lower level and take the 
5* Luxury with Pool – In the first place, La Favorita is in an excellent location high atop a cliff. It is perfectly positioned between the sea and center of town. Secondly, it one of the most elegant and beautiful properties in Sorrento. Not to mention, there is nightly rooftop entertainment with dancing and cocktails. Of course, the rooftop pool, as well as the hotel, has stunning panoramic views of the Mediterranean.
You will find picturesque, charming, clifftop towns looking over pastel colored fishing villages. It is definitely a feast for your eyes, not to mention your stomach! Of course, this area is tops for Southern Italian food. Think of delicious red sauces, olive oil, cheeses, fresh caught seafood and amazing pastas! Heaven on earth is calling you!
Sorrento Italia, known for appetizing food and unique lidos, also has beautiful art and architecture. The charming historic center is made up of lovely narrow cobblestone streets. There are many cafes, boutiques and shops catering to your every taste. It is impossible to avoid lemons and delicious limoncello here – it is known as the land of lemons!
Not only is Sorrento is a perfect base for visiting the Amalfi Coast Italy, but also nearby islands. A short ferry ride can whisk you away to gorgeous Capri and Ischia. Moreover, if you are historically minded, it is easy to get to Pompeii and Herculaneum. Also, a short 35 minute drive will take you to
