Ortigia

Ortigia – Falling in Love with Sicily Starts Here

Ortigia Sicily – look no further! The sea sparkles like a handful of diamonds and history flourishes here. This tiny island is a little more than a half mile long, but it packs enough magic to fill a lifetime of travel dreams. Ortigia—the historical heart of Syracuse—manages to pack 3,000 years of drama into its narrow, limestone-paved veins. Connected to the mainland by two modest bridges, Ortigia feels less like a city and more like a floating, enchanting retreat. I love it here!

A Stroll Through Ortigia

Ortigia isn’t a place of “must-see” checklists; it’s a place of “must-feel” moments. It’s the smell of sea salt and fried arancini, the sound of accordions echoing off medieval walls, and the feeling that you’ve stepped into a version of Italy that time forgot to modernize.

First, Get Lost in the Alleys

Leave the map behind and wander through the northern part of the island, a labyrinth of medieval Arab-style streets. As you explore, look for artisan shops and hidden courtyards tucked into the “secret” side streets. Instead of following directions, put your phone away and embrace the experience of becoming a wanderer.
Find the Jewish Quarter: Next, make your way to the Giudecca district and explore the historic Jewish Quarter. Here, beneath a non-descript hotel, you can find some of the oldest Mikvah (ritual baths) in Europe, hidden deep underground in the cool bedrock.

Sunset Spritz

Eventually, head to Lungomare Alfeo on the western side of the island for a sunset spritz. As evening approaches, find a spot along the sea wall and watch the sky turn the color of a blood orange as evening sets in. Finally, to end the day, grab a granita and join the locals for a passeggiata while the sky slowly fades to pink.

Clou Lounge Bar & Restaurant: Located atop the iconic Grand Hotel Des Étrangers, this rooftop offers a360-degree panoramic view of Ortigia Island and the Ionian Sea. Perfect to walk in for an aperitivo any time of day or night.
Reservations: Since it’s a popular spot for the “best view in Syracuse” booking ahead is highly recommended to secure a dining table at the terrace edge.

Why You’ll Fall in Love

Don’t rush! Ortigia isn’t a “checklist” destination; it’s a “feeling” destination. Give yourself permission to sit in the Piazza del Duomo for an hour just to watch the world go by.

Why Ortigia Sicily is Pure Magic – “Must-See” Monuments

  • Piazza del Duomo: Frequently called the most beautiful square in Italy, and this is no exaggeration! The Cathedral of Syracuse is a masterpiece of Sicilian Baroque – dripping with stone carvings. It is built inside a 5th-century BC Greek Temple of Athena. You can still see the massive ancient Greek columns embedded into the structure.
  • The Fonte of Arethusa: You can’t walk ten feet in Ortigia without tripping over a legend. This freshwater spring is on the edge of the Ionian Sea. According to Greek myth, the nymph Arethusa fled here to escape an unwanted suitor, only to be turned into a spring by Artemis. Today, it’s a lush sanctuary filled with ducks and wild papyrus.
  • Castello Maniace: Located at the very tip of the island, this 13th-century fortress offers 360-degree views of the Ionian Sea.
  • Fountain of Diana:  Depicts the goddess Diana protecting the nymph Arethusa by transforming her into a fountain
Fontana di Diana

Golden Hour Everything: As the sun dips, the white limestone buildings turn a honey-gold hue. This is the time to walk the Lungomare, the seaside promenade, with a granata or gelato in hand.

Zefiro Solarium Ortigia

First, rethink the idea of beach in Ortigia. The “beach” is often just a wooden platform (solarium) perched over turquoise water. Therefore, look for a ladder leading into the most pristine swimming hole you’ve ever seen.
Zefiro Solarium Sea Lounge provides a stunning setting for a relaxing day, offering crystal-clear water access and a perfectly curated selection of drinks and light bites. The chic, sun-drenched deck and exceptional service make it the ultimate spot to soak up the sun in style. I booked our umbrella and lounges a few weeks before our trip – it was definitely worth it!

Ortigia Drinks……

Barcollo in Ortigia has a standout vibe. The Courtyard is perfect for cocktails before or after dinner. To begin with, the cocktails are the star here. In addition, the venue sits tucked away from the main tourist crowds, and its candlelit area is adorned with fresh flowers and greenery. As a result, the atmosphere feels perfect for a summer evening aperitivo. Moreover, the bar is located inside the historic Palazzo Giaracà. Ultimately, it’s the kind of place where you stop for one drink and end up staying the entire night. 🍸

Market Mornings: You must head to the Ortigia Market early. Soak in the friendly chaos of the local vendors. A must-visit destination in the market is Caseificio Borderi. If you’re seeking authentic Sicilian flavors they offer incredible, hand-crafted sandwiches and a vibrant, welcoming atmosphere.

While you’re in Sicily, make sure you put Taormina on your must-see list. It is truly worth a visit!!

Lipari Aeolian Islands Sicily

The picturesque island of Lipari is the largest and most popular of the Aeolian Islands. Summer brings crowds of Italians to visit. The charming old town is certainly worth a visit. Moreover, the crystalline turquoise sea attracts vacationers to the pretty beaches. Since this island is located off the northern coast of Sicily, the climate is definitely warm and mild. It certainly makes a great base for visiting the other Aeolian Islands. Most of all, Lipari boasts an exciting Old Town and bustling Marina area.

Make sure to go to Marina Corta, which is a short walk from Corso Vittorio Emanuele.  It is a charming harbor filled with colorful fishing boats and the main church. Taormina Travel

Tantalizing Taormina Italy

This is by far my favorite place in all of Italy! Perched upon a cliff above the shimmering sea, adorned with a backdrop of majestic mountains, Taormina Italy, is the sparkling jewel of Sicily. Indeed, Taormina is a gem. It is known for its breathtaking views and spectacular natural beauty. It is vibrant, chic and has everything you can dream of in a beautiful Italian town. Enjoy a magnificent town center, beautiful beaches and a spectacular ancient Greco-Roman theater.

NOTE: MAX’s hit show, THE WHITE LOTUS, used spectacular Taormina as their major filming location for Season 2. The reason, of course, is that Taormina is just amazing! Experience the thrill of the show by taking a tour or booking the White Lotus Hotel which is actually the San Domenico Palace.

To me, the Church of San Giuseppe is one of the most splendid.  It was built in the 17th century in grand Baroque style and dedicated to Saint Joseph.  Its beauty dominates the main square of town, Piazza IX Aprile.

Chiesa di San Giuseppe

Taormina Sicily Italy’s Old Town

In the first place, you have panoramic views of the Ionian Sea. Secondly, expect to see stunning views of famous Mount Etna, idly smoking in the distance. In addition to its natural beauty, Taormina boasts a magnificent town center. Walking along Corso Umberto is a unique experience, with chic boutiques, open air cafes, bars and restaurants. It is simply charming. Moreover, town is surrounded by lush gardens and beautiful villas making it an ideal destination for those who love beauty and culture.

Taormina Italy

Corso Umberto is the charming main street of Taormina and leads from the Porta Messina arch across the town to the Porta Catania arch. A brisk walk would take about 15 minutes. BUT expect it to take an hour or two just to enjoy the sights! I can never get tired of it, and I have been to Taormina almost ten times! As I said before, it is my favorite place – maybe in the world.

Taormina Sicily Italy

Placed half-way between Taormina’s two main gates, is Piazza IX Aprile, the town’s main square. Located in the south side of the piazza is the Clock Tower or Porta di Mezzo which forms the passageway leading from the Greek-Roman part to the Medieval part.

Taormina Sicily

Taormina’s Charm

The ancient city of Taormina is completely walkable and attractive.  For instance, flowers tumbling down balconies of pretty buildings and pink Oleander trees, simply skyrocket the level of charm.  Furthermore, narrow cobblestone streets with cute little shops set the stage for delight! Taormina is much bigger than you think. Therefore, explore all the little side streets as they will lead you to something special!

As I mentioned before, there are two main gathering places, Piazza Aprile and Piazza Duomo. Taormina’s main square, Piazza IX April, has amazing views of the sea below.  Located in the center of town, it is the perfect place to spend your time. You will eat, drink, listen to music, and watch the parade of people strolling by.

It is a wonderful gathering spot for locals and tourists alike. It is a joy to hear local musicians play classic Italian songs.  Moreover, the panoramic view will keep you mesmerized.

Taormina Travel
Piazza Duomo is also a beautiful area to sit and rest by the main fountain. Enjoy your surroundings and take a drink of the fresh fountain water!
