Ravello Italy

Ravello Italy is the definition of classy and chic. Located high above the Amalfi Coast’s seaside villages, Ravello offers stunning, panoramic views of the mountains and sea below. White houses cling to cliffs, along with green citrus groves dotted with yellow lemons. What’s more, majestic villas warmly welcome you for drinks or dinners. Enjoy the grandeur, beauty and pleasure of Ravello.

Ravello Italy

Ravello is perched 1200 feet above the Amalfi Coast. The drive up is a little terrifying for me, since cars and cliffs are not my thing! Yikes! However, it is quite a magical place and definitely worth seeing. You will find beautiful villas, cliffside gardens and stunning vistas.
Getting there: It is a 17 minute drive from Amalfi, 1 hour drive from Positano, and 1.5 hour drive from Sorrento. A preferred way is to ferry from Sorrento/Positano to Amalfi and then taxi or bus to Ravello. This is a compact town which can be seen in a day trip. On the other hand, two nights is a terrific way to relax and enjoy its historical villas, jaw dropping views and delicious restaurants. After all, this charming medieval village is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Villa Cimbrone
Villa Cimbrone’s Terrace of Infinity

Piazza Vescovado is the beautiful center hub of Ravello. It is a large square which embraces its ancient Duomo. Built in the 11th century, the Duomo is a dedication to Saint Mary of the Assumption. The exterior bears a stark white appearance. The interior, on the other hand, is adorned with granite columns, intricate mosaics, and a marble chapel.

In addition, the square hosts an array of cafes to sit, relax and absorb the beauty in front of you. Cafe Duomo happened to be my favorite. Delicious caffe espresso and cappuccino, along with pizza and other delights. In addition, the square hosts an array of cafes with delicious cappuccino, pizza and other delights. My favorite happened to be Caffe Duomo – great service and coffee!

Cafe Duomo

There are so many little corners to discover that are certainly picture worthy. Discover the cobbled steps and ramps that go up and down the town. There is something to see at every turn. Indeed, there is an abundance of vines and bougainvillea as well as fountains and statues.Ca

What to do in Ravello Italy

To begin with, explore the main square Pizzza Vescovado. At the edge of the Piazza is a little park with stunning views – a great place for pictures. Next, at the edge of the square, visit Villa Ruffalo. It is an elegant villa with a small museum containing artwork and historical artifacts. In addition, the terraced gardens are also a beautiful attraction for visitors.

Via Roma

Walk the entire Via Roma. This narrow-cobbled street will tempt you with beautiful ceramics, clothing and a host of other beautiful souvenirs to take home. Don’t forget to purchase some Limoncello so that you can still savor the Amalfi Coast when you get back home.

Villa Cimbrone

Villa Cimbrone in Ravello

You must walk up to the spectacular 11th century, Villa Cimbrone. It is the pinnacle of Ravello and offers magnificent views of the Bay of Sorrento and coastline. The villa itself is a 5-star hotel – Hotel Villa Cimbrone. It boasts stunning terraced gardens that are open to the public from 9am till 8pm daily. It is truly a romantic, perfect spot for weddings and honeymoons.

Palazzo Avino Ravello Italy

Villa Avino Ravello
Palazzo Avino’s spectacular terrace over the sparkling Mediterranean Sea is a must!

Delight in dinner, drinks or both on Terrazza Belvedere at this fantastic destination. Palazzo Avino is a stunning 5-star hotel on Italy’s famous Amalfi coast. Originally it was a 12th century private villa for Italian nobility. Currently, it is one of the most beautiful hotels I have ever seen!

Where to Stay – Ravello Italy Hotels

I would love to advise you to absolutely book Villa Cimbrone or Palazzo Avino. But I can only recommend if you are splurging on an extravagant honeymoon or simply have money to burn. I stayed at Palazzo Confalone and loved it. It was in the perfect location, with a beautiful room at a reasonable price in Ravello Italy.

Ravello Amalfi Coast is more beautiful than any picture can depict! But this will give you a taste of the beauty and magic of Ravello. Enjoy and click to enlarge.

Bellagio, The Stunning Pearl of Lake Como

My favorite town on Lake Como is Bellagio! It is truly a gem and is often called the “Pearl of Lake Como”. Nestled between the shimmering waters and beautiful mountain peaks, Bellagio exudes charm at every turn. Its picturesque old town, with winding cobblestone streets and vibrant, colorful buildings, invites you to wander and soak in the atmosphere. The views are simply breathtaking, the food is exceptional, and the locals are incredibly warm and welcoming. For me, Bellagio has everything I could hope for in an Italian town.

Bellagio Italy

You’ll fall head over heels for Bellagio the moment you arrive. This dreamy little town is bursting with charm — from its adorable boutiques and cozy cafés to its mouthwatering restaurants tucked along lively cobblestone streets. The views? Absolutely magical. Bellagio is delightfully walkable, making it perfect for slow, scenic strolls. Wander up the narrow lanes that climb from the lake and you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views from the top of town. And if you’re staying the night, you’re in for a treat — some truly special hotels are nestled right here, adding a little charm to the fairytale.

Things to do in Bellagio Italy

First, exploring town is one of the best things to do, since there are so many picturesque spots. Undeniably, Salita Serbelloni is one of the most charming. It is a cobbled staircase which begins at the lakefront, and runs to the top of town. Here you will find cozy shops, quaint cafes and delightful restaurants. Furthermore, delight in seeing colourful homes adorned with plants and flowers. Indeed, you will definitely enjoy soaking in the Italian sights and sounds of this special town.

Melzi Gardens

Secondly, to see stunning views of the lake, beautiful plants, trees and walking paths, take a stroll to Melzi Gardens. They are on the grounds of a 1800’s villa once owned by the President of the Italian Republic. The gardens are free to the public and worth the 15 minute walk.

Melzi Gardens
Melzi Gardens

Third, take the time to visit other towns of Lake Como. You will fine Varenna, Lenno, Tremezza and Mennagio close by. The ferry in Bellagio is connected to many other Lake Como towns that criss cross the lake. This public boat service easily connects the shore towns. Go to Navigazione Laghi to see timetables and costs.

Bellagio Lake Como Italy
Ferry Service throughout the lake

Lido di Bellagio

Then, I always try to fit in some fun in the sun! If you would like to relax in the sun with gazebos and sun beds, Bellagio offers Lido di Bellagio. It is on the shore of the lake between Bellagio and Villa Melzi. It is a fun little ‘beach’ where you can sip a cocktail and have a light lunch.
Subsequently, in addition of things to do, visit the Romanesque basilica of San Giacomo (St James). The church was built in the 12th century and the iconic bell tower is seen from the shore.

Bellagio, Italy

At this point, follow your footsteps and your heart will be happy just to live in the moment of amazing Belligio Italy. Defiitely a must visit!

Eze, French Riviera

Words are hard to describe the charm!

Eze is perched high up on a mountain top with stunning views of the sea in the French Riviera. It is one of the most beautiful medieval villages I’ve ever visited. There are narrow cobblestone streets that twist and turn among stone houses. The only way to access this village is by foot as there are no roads or cars. You’ll find hot pink bougainvillea, ivy and flowers growing everywhere. Browse or shop in the boutiques, art galleries and jewelry stores along the winding walkways. The twelfth century church dominates one aspect of the unique hilltop village, and is classified as an historical monument.

Eze French Riviera

In addition, let me say a word about the food here – excellent!!! Really amazing, fresh, delicious French food.  Everything – fruits, vegetables, cheeses, meats, etc. are all carried up to the restaurants by foot, as  the village is totally pedestrian. Eze is well worth a visit if you are in the French Riviera.

French Riviera

The BEST of EZE……..

Here are some of my favorites in and around Eze.

EZE HOTELS

Chateau de la Chevre d’Or (Castle of the Golden Goat)

Pool and view at Chateau de la Chèvre d'or in Eze, France

Luxury: This is a one of a kind luxury hotel perched on a hilltop in the village of Eze. The views are stunning and the rooms are scattered throughout a portion of the medieval streets. Take in the magnificent scenery as you are in a very special area.
The accommodations, service and staff are amazing, as well as the beauty of the entire property.   In addition, there is a gym and small pool. Please be aware that this is quite an expensive hotel,  however, you will feel like you’re in paradise.

EZE B&B’s

Bastide aux Camelias

B&B Eze Village, Bastide aux Camelias

Village Suite

This B&B owns two properties. The first is a XVI century charming guesthouse in a quiet, relaxing area only a 5 minute drive from Eze Village. It has an amazing sea view, pool and beautiful garden.

Next, they have the Village Suite, which is tucked away in Eze Village. I highly recommend the Village Suite for a wonderful experience because you are right in the heart of the medieval village. The rooftop terrace has stunning views of the coast. You really feel like you are walking back in time.

EZE RESTAURANTS

They also sell items in a little olive oil shop. I wish I could go back to eat again! Very kind and friendly staff/ family. You cannot be disappointed!
Address: 5 rue du Chateau, Eze

EZE BEACHES

La Plage d’Eze

Eze Beaches
Eze has one beach located at the bottom of the mountain in Eze-sur-Mer. It is a great beach for swimming. You will find two beach clubs; posh Papaya and casual Anjuna Bay. Both clubs rent beds and umbrellas for about 20 euros. Access the beach from the Eze-sur-Mer train station’s underpass. Make a right and walk along the beach to reach the restaurants/clubs. Enjoy your day in the French sunshine!

THINGS TO DO IN EZE

Le Jardin Exotique d’Eze

Eze French Riviera

These beautiful gardens have species of plants from all around the world. The garden offers spectacular panoramic views of the Mediterranean as it perched on the highest point of Eze.  Admission is 6 euros.

Tropaeum Alpium (Victory Monument of the Alps)

eve French Riviera

These historical ruins were built in 6 BC in honor of emperor Augustus. It sits at the highest point on the mountain. Take in the breathtaking views of the entire French Riviera and the beauty of the architecture of this amazing historical monument.

Nietzsche Path

Do you like exercise and the great outdoors?  Then this activity is for you! Hike down from Eze Village or up from Eze-sur-Mer (aka Eze-Bord-de-Mer) and enjoy the magnificent scenery.  First of all, get an early start before the sun gets hot. In addition, take water and wear sneakers not flip flops.  Most of the trail is stone and pebbles – you don’t want to slip.  Depending upon your personal pace, this is about a 45-60 minute vertical hike, about 1650 feet, therefore expect a strenuous workout on the way up. Of course, you can always take it slower.

Hiking up the trail, I use the Eze-Bord-de-Mer train station as a landmark. At street level, with your back to the train station, make a right. Continue 5 minutes and on your left you will see a little sign ‘Sentier Nietzsche’. Follow ramp to the left and enjoy a healthy hike up to amazingly beautiful Eze Village.

The hike down from Eze Village gives you full views of the Mediterranean, so have your camera ready!  When you finish the hike down, visit the lovely Eze-sur-Mer beach. Access to the descending trail from Eze village, is located at the bottom of the village (where the car parks are) on the cliffside.  You will see a sign that says ‘EZE/MER – Gare Plage’. Enjoy the amazing scenic beauty on the way down.

Villefranche-sur-Mer

Enjoy a fabulous day of sightseeing, shopping or the beach in this charming French old town.  There is so much to see and do in this fantastic village! Villefranche-sur-Mer  is definitely one of my favorite places on the French Riviera.  Visit my Villefranche-sur-mer blog post to read more about this wonderful, charming town.

Monte Carlo, Monaco

Casino of Monte Carlo

Monte Carlo, the land of the ultra rich and famous, is a mere 9 minute train ride from Eze. Visit the renowned Casino and if you get lucky, go shopping in the ultra high end stores! If not, enjoy sitting at a cafe in Casino Square and watch the people and exotic cars go by.

Villefranche sur Mer

Villafranche sur Mer

Certainly one of the most charming villages on the French Riviera  – actually it’s my favorite!

Villefranche sur Mer is positioned on a beautiful bay between Monaco and Nice.  Alongside its attractive harbor are cafes, restaurants and boats bobbing in the Mediterranean. If you are looking for a classic old town village with class and beauty, this is for you. This charming old town winds its way up narrow cobblestone streets with colorful buildings. Moreover, flowers, plants and ivy adorn the walkways, balconies and buildings.  There are boutiques and cafes scattered all around. This town is a feast for your eyes and joy for your soul.                                                                                                                                       Villefranche sur MerMoreover, the restaurants here are incredibly delicious!  I have been lucky enough to travel here 5 times and each and every visit just outdoes the last with the amazing food – just superb! Villefranche is a wonderful summer vacation spot, sometimes more busy than others due to cruise ships visit.

Tantalizing Taormina Italy

This is by far my favorite place in all of Italy! Perched upon a cliff above the shimmering sea, adorned with a backdrop of majestic mountains, Taormina Italy, is the sparkling jewel of Sicily. Indeed, Taormina is a gem. It is known for its breathtaking views and spectacular natural beauty. It is vibrant, chic and has everything you can dream of in a beautiful Italian town. Enjoy a magnificent town center, beautiful beaches and a spectacular ancient Greco-Roman theater.

NOTE: MAX’s hit show, THE WHITE LOTUS, used spectacular Taormina as their major filming location for Season 2. The reason, of course, is that Taormina is just amazing! Experience the thrill of the show by taking a tour or booking the White Lotus Hotel which is actually the San Domenico Palace.

To me, the Church of San Giuseppe is one of the most splendid.  It was built in the 17th century in grand Baroque style and dedicated to Saint Joseph.  Its beauty dominates the main square of town, Piazza IX Aprile.

Chiesa di San Giuseppe

Taormina Sicily Italy’s Old Town

In the first place, you have panoramic views of the Ionian Sea. Secondly, expect to see stunning views of famous Mount Etna, idly smoking in the distance. In addition to its natural beauty, Taormina boasts a magnificent town center. Walking along Corso Umberto is a unique experience, with chic boutiques, open air cafes, bars and restaurants. It is simply charming. Moreover, town is surrounded by lush gardens and beautiful villas making it an ideal destination for those who love beauty and culture.

Taormina Italy

Corso Umberto is the charming main street of Taormina and leads from the Porta Messina arch across the town to the Porta Catania arch. A brisk walk would take about 15 minutes. BUT expect it to take an hour or two just to enjoy the sights! I can never get tired of it, and I have been to Taormina almost ten times! As I said before, it is my favorite place – maybe in the world.

Taormina Sicily Italy

Placed half-way between Taormina’s two main gates, is Piazza IX Aprile, the town’s main square. Located in the south side of the piazza is the Clock Tower or Porta di Mezzo which forms the passageway leading from the Greek-Roman part to the Medieval part.

Taormina Sicily

Taormina’s Charm

The ancient city of Taormina is completely walkable and attractive.  For instance, flowers tumbling down balconies of pretty buildings and pink Oleander trees, simply skyrocket the level of charm.  Furthermore, narrow cobblestone streets with cute little shops set the stage for delight! Taormina is much bigger than you think. Therefore, explore all the little side streets as they will lead you to something special!

As I mentioned before, there are two main gathering places, Piazza Aprile and Piazza Duomo. Taormina’s main square, Piazza IX April, has amazing views of the sea below.  Located in the center of town, it is the perfect place to spend your time. You will eat, drink, listen to music, and watch the parade of people strolling by.

It is a wonderful gathering spot for locals and tourists alike. It is a joy to hear local musicians play classic Italian songs.  Moreover, the panoramic view will keep you mesmerized.

Taormina Travel
Piazza Duomo is also a beautiful area to sit and rest by the main fountain. Enjoy your surroundings and take a drink of the fresh fountain water!

Best of Taormina Sicily Italy

For a bit of history, don’t miss the impressive and famous Greek Amphitheater. Meanwhile, make sure to visit the beautiful beaches. A must visit is Isola Bella, a small island connected to the mainland by a narrow strip of sand. Perfect for a relaxing day at the beach. Ride the Funicular (cable car) down to the picturesque bay and beaches of Taormina Mare. All the beach clubs have delicious restaurants and rent beds, towels and umbrellas.
Shopping All things considered; Taormina Sicily should be on the top of your list when you visit Italy It is definitely a feast for your eyes. Get ready for a Sicilian adventure listed on my Things to Do in Taormina post!

Oia Santorini

OIA Santorini is Paradise in the Greek Islands

When you visit the village of Oia Santorini, it seems like you stepped into a fantasy.

First of all, Oia Greece is one of the most spectacular places I’ve ever traveled to. It is known for it’s devastatingly gorgeous views, amazing sunsets and sloping cliffs. A volcanic eruption thousands of years ago gave Santorini its distinctive crescent shape, sheer cliffs and shimmering bay called the Caldera. It has entranced visitors and locals alike ever since. Oia is perched high upon a soaring cliff making views of the infinite blue Aegean sea sensational and endless. Furthermore, the charming, iconic whitewashed homes, labyrinth of narrow streets and blue domes truly magnify its beauty. Oia is beyond doubt, a feast for your eyes!Oia Santorini

Oia Santorini is busy with tourists strolling the streets visiting the multitude of shops, cafes, restaurants, and art galleries. In addition, it is a hot spot for honeymooners and long-time couples alike. Most of all, the beautiful village of Oia has hypnotic vistas, jaw-dropping views and colorful sunsets into the sea that you will remember for a lifetime. When you visit Greece, and the Greek Islands don’t miss out on visiting Oia Greece.

Oia Sunset

Oia Santorini Sunset
The magnificent sunset-watching hour is a major event in Oia Santorini.  Crowds gather on the terraces, walls steps and main pedestrian street at the tip of the cliff in order to see this beautiful event!  All the cobblestone streets are clogged!  There is actually a spectator look-out area by the Byzantine Castle, but go early in order to get a good seat!  Better yet, grab a spot in a restaurant or cafe and take in the spectacle with some delicious Greek wine.  Opa!

Nightlife in Oia Santorini

The restaurant and cafe scene is tremendously busy in Oia, but for clubs and dancing, you would have to visit Fira. Using public buses is a convenient and inexpensive way to get around, with many departure times. For schedules, check Santorini Public Buses.
Cost: Oia to Fira is EUR 1.80  (EUR 2.30 after midnight) and takes about 25 minutes.

Things to Do in Oia Santorini

Amoudi Bay

Three hundred steps down from the village of Oia Santorini is the charming, quiet port of Amoudi. Here you will find several traditional tavernas that serve fresh caught fish and octopus.  Looking up, you will see the picturesque whitewashed houses of Oia in the distance with red cliffs all around you.  The water is crystal clear and sparkling blue.  You can walk along the bay on the big rocks or take a refreshing swim. Remember to take your camera because you will get some great shots on the steps and by the water.  Believe it or not, walking down gives your legs a workout because the steps are a few strides deep and slanted downward. Consequently walking up is a vigorous hike.  Wear good shoes/sneakers.  Alternatively, you can take a taxi or bus.
Fun Fact:  The movie, Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, was filmed at Amoudi Bay in Oia Santorini Greece.

 Byzantine Castle Ruins

Formerly a 15th-century castle, today you will find ruins of a tower here.  Notably, the best panoramic views of Santorini are seen from these ruins. The view from the citadel boasts picturesque whitewashed buildings, a windmill, and the azure sea beneath spectacular cliffs. A photographers dream!  Also this is the best spot to see Oia’s spectacular sunset.

Catamaran Excursion on the Sunset Oia

Oia Santorini Sunset Oia Catamaran

Sunset Oia 74′ Catamaran

Enjoy a morning or sunset cruise on a 74′ catamaran!  It is a wonderful way to see the beautiful vista of the red cliffs and villages perched above. Included is a delicious BBQ, beer, wine and soft drinks.  You can sun on the catamaran’s trampoline or sit in comfortable lounge seats.  It stops at the Red beach and White beach for swimming and snorkeling. In addition, it stops at the Hot Springs for swimming and a mud bath. The morning cruise time is 9:30-2:30. You can also take an afternoon cruise to see the  spectacular sunset.  A memorable, wonderful day is in store for you!  Departures are from Amoudi Bay in Oia.

This is a very quiet and beautiful small beach with black sand and pebbles.  From Oia, Katharos Beach is only a 15 minute walk down the cliff steps and on a path.  On the way down, there is a cute cafe where you can get a nice lunch.  There are no facilities, therefore, bring your towels.

Kamari Beach, Santorini
Kamari Beach

A fun suggestion is to rent an ATV or scooter for a 35 minute ride to a very popular beach resort, Kamari Beach.  Karmari Beach is a totally different vibe that Oia.  Kamari’s long  sandy beach is crowded with plenty of sun worshippers.  Oh, did I mention that the sand is black?  Furthermore, the beach is lined with a multitude of cafe’s, restaurants, boutiques, stores and tourists. Public bus to Kamari Beach (Santorini Public Buses) takes about 45 minutes with a change in Fira.

Rosé Anyone?

You will be sure to raise a glass of Rosé when you’re in Saint Tropez. This is just a small selection of Rosé that the French Riviera has to offer! Raise a glass and say “santé”

Getting to St. Tropez

Of course, taking a private transfer is always the best, although the most expensive way to go, about 180 euros in 2022. A good, easy option is train to ferry. From the Nice Airport or other coastal towns, take the train to Sainte-Maxime. Next board the Sainte-Maxime to Saint-Tropez ferry which takes about 15 min. If you have light luggage, you can walk to the ferry station in 10 minutes. However with heavy luggage taxis are available. You are able to purchase tickets at the ferry station and there are constant shuttles daily.

Sooo pretty!St. Tropez, Cote d'azur

St. Tropez is a village with winding alleys and colorful façades – a picturesque and characterful maze of pastel homes and cobbled lanes. You will find a picturesque site at every turn.

Verona Italy the City of Love

Discover Verona

I found Verona to be one of the most beautiful cities in Italy. For example, Verona boasts stunning architecture, ancient frescos, beautiful churches and lovely piazzas. Verona’s main attractions are its wealth of Roman ruins mixed with its charming, pedestrian-only ambiance. Roman and medieval bridges add important characteristics dating back to Roman times. The Adige River snakes through town, adding to the delightful atmosphere. The list of WOW just goes on and on in Verona, Italy!

Verona

This ancient city is built on the banks of the Adige River and is one of the main tourist destinations in Northern Italy. You are close to Venice and only a 30 minute drive to Lake Garda. Once you visit, it is easy to see why. This city of love and passion is a must see. Flowers and greenery are everywhere. It’s a photographer’s dream city.

Verona Piazza della Erbe

Every step is a surprise….

To truly discover Verona is to wander all the narrow streets and cobblestone lanes. There are  wide roads dating back to Roman times, as well as narrow medieval ones, which hide treasures and amazing sights. Moreover, it is known as the city of love and the story of Romeo and Juliet.

Raising the wow factor to the roof is the numerous amount of wineries right outside the city gates. Verona is famous for wines like Valpolicella, Amarone, Prosecco and Soave!

Positano, Italy

Picturesque Positano Italy is a magical and enchanted village known throughout the world. Celebrities arrive by land or by yacht in the  summer. It is built into a cliff and is also called the Vertical City. With this in mind, an unusual network of stairways enhance the town. There is only one street for vehicles. Hence, the rest of the village is pedestrian only. Getting around by foot will let you appreciate pastel-colored homes, flower filled terraces and endless steps carved out of the rock. There are narrow pedestrian alleys and, of course, steps that flow down to the busy harbor and beach.Positano Beaches

Those charming steps…..Positano Italy

A few steps from the beach, you will find the church of Santa Maria Assunta. It features a majolica-tiled dome and a 13th-century Byzantine icon of the Virgin Mary. Legend says that in the 12th century AD, a ship carrying this same icon came from the sea during a huge storm. The sailors all heard a voice saying, “Posa Posa” which means “leave me here”. Thus the name Positano.  Moreover, this is why the Madonna has been kept in Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta ever since.

Posa Posa – We DO NOT want to leave! Feel the warmth and friendliness of the wonderful locals. Not only are they welcoming, but also happy to teach you a bit of Italian. Take joy in the beauty of the landscape, the gorgeous views, and the pretty beaches. Positano Italy is simply magical!

Grottaglie: The Ceramics Heart of Puglia

Clay, Color, and Soul: Why You’ll Fall in Love with Grottaglie

Among the most charming towns in the Puglia region is undoubtedly Grottaglie. Forget the crowded tourist traps of the coast and turn your gaze toward the limestone ravines of Puglia. Grottaglie is a town where tradition and warmth flow as freely as the southern sun.

Grottaglie

Here, tucked away in the province of Taranto, lies Grottaglie—the Ceramic Heart of Puglia. This isn’t just a town; it is a living, breathing masterpiece. Every cobblestone tells a story with the rhythm of artisans shaping clay. Each ceramic piece is a story of patience, pride, and love. Its narrow streets display colorful art while bougainvillea flowers spill over stone walls.

Step Into the Quartiere delle Ceramiche

Grottaglie: The Ceramics Heart of Puglia

Your journey begins in the world-famous Ceramics Quarter. Unlike anywhere else in Italy, this entire district lives within the rock. Dozens of artisan workshops, or botteghe, occupy ancient caves carved directly into the ravine. As you wander the narrow streets, you can watch master craftsmen as they use raw Puglia earth. They are so welcoming and friendly!

Grottaglie: The Ceramics Heart of Puglia

They transform it into elegant “Bianchi di Grottaglie” (the town’s signature white-glazed pottery) right before your eyes. Moreover, the vibrant colors of the Pumo—a traditional ceramic flower bud symbolizing fertility and rebirth—decorate every balcony. These colors welcome you with a warm hug.

Taste the Flavors of the Land

Grottaglie

After you’ve filled your bags with pottery, satisfy your appetite with Grottaglie’s other great love: food and wine. Grottaglie also carries the title “City of Grapes.” Consequently, a trip here is incomplete without sipping a glass of bold Primitivo wine at a local vineria. Pair your drink with handmade orecchiette pasta or fresh octopus, and you’ll understand why Puglian hospitality is legendary.

Why You Need to Go to Grottaglie

Grottaglie

Grottaglie balances ancient tradition with a cool, contemporary street art scene. In fact, as you stroll through the historic center, you’ll find vibrant murals that contrast beautifully with the weathered limestone walls. It is a place where the past and the future hold hands.
Ultimately, Grottaglie doesn’t just show you its beauty; it invites you to touch it, shape it, and take a piece of it home.

Be sure to see these other charming Puglian towns…..

Ortigia – Falling in Love with Sicily Starts Here

Ortigia Sicily – look no further! The sea sparkles like a handful of diamonds and history flourishes here. This tiny island is a little more than a half mile long, but it packs enough magic to fill a lifetime of travel dreams. Ortigia—the historical heart of Syracuse—manages to pack 3,000 years of drama into its narrow, limestone-paved veins. Connected to the mainland by two modest bridges, Ortigia feels less like a city and more like a floating, enchanting retreat. I love it here!

A Stroll Through Ortigia

Ortigia isn’t a place of “must-see” checklists; it’s a place of “must-feel” moments. It’s the smell of sea salt and fried arancini, the sound of accordions echoing off medieval walls, and the feeling that you’ve stepped into a version of Italy that time forgot to modernize.

First, Get Lost in the Alleys

Leave the map behind and wander through the northern part of the island, a labyrinth of medieval Arab-style streets. As you explore, look for artisan shops and hidden courtyards tucked into the “secret” side streets. Instead of following directions, put your phone away and embrace the experience of becoming a wanderer.
Find the Jewish Quarter: Next, make your way to the Giudecca district and explore the historic Jewish Quarter. Here, beneath a non-descript hotel, you can find some of the oldest Mikvah (ritual baths) in Europe, hidden deep underground in the cool bedrock.

Sunset Spritz

Eventually, head to Lungomare Alfeo on the western side of the island for a sunset spritz. As evening approaches, find a spot along the sea wall and watch the sky turn the color of a blood orange as evening sets in. Finally, to end the day, grab a granita and join the locals for a passeggiata while the sky slowly fades to pink.

Clou Lounge Bar & Restaurant: Located atop the iconic Grand Hotel Des Étrangers, this rooftop offers a360-degree panoramic view of Ortigia Island and the Ionian Sea. Perfect to walk in for an aperitivo any time of day or night.
Reservations: Since it’s a popular spot for the “best view in Syracuse” booking ahead is highly recommended to secure a dining table at the terrace edge.

Why You’ll Fall in Love

Don’t rush! Ortigia isn’t a “checklist” destination; it’s a “feeling” destination. Give yourself permission to sit in the Piazza del Duomo for an hour just to watch the world go by.

Why Ortigia Sicily is Pure Magic – “Must-See” Monuments

  • Piazza del Duomo: Frequently called the most beautiful square in Italy, and this is no exaggeration! The Cathedral of Syracuse is a masterpiece of Sicilian Baroque – dripping with stone carvings. It is built inside a 5th-century BC Greek Temple of Athena. You can still see the massive ancient Greek columns embedded into the structure.
  • The Fonte of Arethusa: You can’t walk ten feet in Ortigia without tripping over a legend. This freshwater spring is on the edge of the Ionian Sea. According to Greek myth, the nymph Arethusa fled here to escape an unwanted suitor, only to be turned into a spring by Artemis. Today, it’s a lush sanctuary filled with ducks and wild papyrus.
  • Castello Maniace: Located at the very tip of the island, this 13th-century fortress offers 360-degree views of the Ionian Sea.
  • Fountain of Diana:  Depicts the goddess Diana protecting the nymph Arethusa by transforming her into a fountain
Fontana di Diana

Golden Hour Everything: As the sun dips, the white limestone buildings turn a honey-gold hue. This is the time to walk the Lungomare, the seaside promenade, with a granata or gelato in hand.

Zefiro Solarium Ortigia

First, rethink the idea of beach in Ortigia. The “beach” is often just a wooden platform (solarium) perched over turquoise water. Therefore, look for a ladder leading into the most pristine swimming hole you’ve ever seen.
Zefiro Solarium Sea Lounge provides a stunning setting for a relaxing day, offering crystal-clear water access and a perfectly curated selection of drinks and light bites. The chic, sun-drenched deck and exceptional service make it the ultimate spot to soak up the sun in style. I booked our umbrella and lounges a few weeks before our trip – it was definitely worth it!

Ortigia Drinks……

Barcollo in Ortigia has a standout vibe. The Courtyard is perfect for cocktails before or after dinner. To begin with, the cocktails are the star here. In addition, the venue sits tucked away from the main tourist crowds, and its candlelit area is adorned with fresh flowers and greenery. As a result, the atmosphere feels perfect for a summer evening aperitivo. Moreover, the bar is located inside the historic Palazzo Giaracà. Ultimately, it’s the kind of place where you stop for one drink and end up staying the entire night. 🍸

Market Mornings: You must head to the Ortigia Market early. Soak in the friendly chaos of the local vendors. A must-visit destination in the market is Caseificio Borderi. If you’re seeking authentic Sicilian flavors they offer incredible, hand-crafted sandwiches and a vibrant, welcoming atmosphere.

While you’re in Sicily, make sure you put Taormina on your must-see list. It is truly worth a visit!!

Limone Lake Garda – A Gem You will love

Limone Lake Garda was once a small humble fishing village, only now this picturesque town has blossomed into a beloved getaway. I definitely recommend it for a day trip or overnight stay. Its narrow, cobbled streets, colorful buildings, and flower-laden balconies make it one of the most enchanting spots on the lake. In fact, we really loved it!
As you stroll through the old town, you’ll find sunny cafes and artisan boutiques that spill out onto piazzas. Pretty lake views that never get old. Every corner feels like a painting. There is bougainvillea climbing up stone walls, and flowers everywhere. You can wander the winding alleys for hours. Stop for gelato. Peek into little shops. Simply soak in the atmosphere.

Limone sul Garda

Limone’s Harbor: Heart of the Town

Limone sul Garda

The harbor is Limone’s most iconic feature. With its charming promenade and cozy benches, you can sit and watch colorful boats bob gently in the water. It’s the perfect place to sip an espresso or enjoy an aperitivo and watch the world go by.
From here, ferries glide across the lake to other beautiful towns like Salo and Sirmione. You are certainly well connected.

The Limone Lemons

Limone sul Garda

The town once thrived on lemon cultivation. As its name suggests, the legacy lives on in its historic lemon houses — limonaie . You can still visit them today. These old structures have stone terraces and protective glass. They tell the story of how this northern village managed to grow citrus fruits. It was in such a unique microclimate. As a result, local shops proudly sell everything lemon. Especially limoncello and lemon-scented soaps, lemon-infused olive oil and candies. After all, it is named Limone!

Scenic Walks & Lakeside Views

Limone sul Garda

If you’re in the mood for something active, but still relaxed, try the Ciclopista del Garda. It offers a cliffside walking and biking path with breathtaking lake views. The path hugs the edge of the mountains. It is an easy and accessible way to take in the natural beauty of the region. The path is especially lovely in the early evening when the water glows golden.

Best Restaurant in Limone: Hostaria al Buongusto

Best restaurant in Limone - Hostaria al Buongusto

Locals describe Hostaria al Buongusto as a “hidden gem”. It is one of the best restaurants in Limone. You’ll enjoy a beautiful garden courtyard complete with lemon trees, and historic stone walls. Dining in a romantic and secluded atmosphere will feel worlds away from the bustling lakeside promenade. Expect perfectly cooked seafood, homemade pasta, grilled meats, and delicious dishes like spaghetti with clams or tagliata di manzo. Finally, the evening ended with a complimentary limoncello — a small but thoughtful gesture that feels very Limone.

Salo Lake Garda- A Chic Slice of Life

Tucked into a graceful curve of the lake’s western shore, the stylish town of Salo stole my heart.
Salò is absolutely chic, but in a quiet, understated, Italian-luxury way. The town has pastel-colored buildings and sleepy cobblestone streets. A lakeside promenade feels like it was made for slow walks and spontaneous daydreams. It whispers elegance in the sweetest Italian accent.

Salo

Salo greets you with flower-draped balconies, breezy cafes, and the gentle clink of wine glasses echoing from waterfront terraces. Time seems to stretch here — like it’s politely waiting for you to soak in every view.

Stylish Dining, Lakefront Views

Salo Lake Garda

Salò’s promenade is the longest on Lake Garda. I made it my mission to walk every sunny inch of it. On one side, the lake sparkles and shimmers. On the other, boutiques, gelaterias, and family-run restaurants line up with delicious offerings. Salò has that perfect blend of elegance and ease. Think:

  • Stylish boutiques with handmade leather sandals and silky dresses
  • Upscale wine bars tucked behind old stone archways
  • Beautiful lakefront villas and carefully manicured gardens
  • Charming hidden courtyards
Salo Lake Garda

The restaurants and cafés in Salò are polished but cozy. Dine al fresco with lake views, jazz in the background, and well dressed locals. Imagine:

  • Aperol Spritz served on silver trays or a delicious Bellini
  • Waiters in crisp white shirts
  • Pasta dishes that look like they belong in a magazine
salo lake garda

Tip: grab a scoop of lemon gelato and walk until your worries melt faster than your ice cream. Bonus points if you catch the sunset turning the water into gold.

Come late afternoon, it’s aperitivo o’clock. Find a table by the water. Order a spritz, or a delicious peach Bellini! Nibble on tiny plates of cheese and olives while boats bob lazily in the harbor. It’s basically a vacation for your soul.

Salo has Culture

salo

Salò isn’t just pretty — it’s cultured, too. The MuSa museum offers a peek into the town’s rich history. Yes, it was once the de facto capital of Mussolini’s short-lived Italian Social Republic. But beyond this, there’s art, architecture, and enough charm to keep your camera busy. In addition, Salò’s got soul. A little stroll through the old town takes you past Renaissance-era architecture and cozy churches.
Don’t miss the Cathedral of Santa Maria Annunziata — it’s like stepping into a soft, candle-lit painting.

Salo lake Garda

A Delicious Detour: Dinner at Caprice Uno

After a day of wandering the promenade and lemon gelato bliss, we found ourselves at Caprice Uno. Dinner dreams do come true. Caprice Uno is on the promenade of Salò and we had a front-row seat to the lake. Every plate was delicious. From the delicious seafood pasts to the perfectly grilled sea bass.

Falling in Love with Hotel Laurin

Hotel Laurin Salo

.From the moment we walked into this beautifully restored villa, we were smitten. The hotel feels like stepping into another era. There are marble floors, grand staircases, and vintage charm everywhere. But you still get all the modern comforts you’d want on vacation. It’s elegant, but never stuffy. Sophisticated, yet incredibly welcoming.
The pool is right in front of the villa. It is framed by palm trees and elegant umbrellas. You can hear the soft clinking of glasses from the poolside bar nearby. No lake views here — but honestly? You don’t miss them. The vibe is pure relaxation. There are sun-soaked loungers, a good book, and a cold spritz. Nothing is on the agenda except maybe… another swim.

salo

💛 Final Thoughts: Salò Is a Hug in Town Form

Salò doesn’t shout for your attention. It simply invites you to slow down, sip slowly, and savor everything. It’s the kind of place where you accidentally stay longer. Therefore, if you’re headed to Lake Garda, don’t just skip from Sirmione to Limone. Give yourself the gift of a Salò for a day trip or overnight.
Of course, from Salo, you will be able to assess other towns by ferry, including Limone, Sirmione, Garda Lazise and Bardolino.

The Enchanting “City of the Sassi”

Nestled in the rolling hills of southern Italy, at the edge of Puglia, lies the enchanting city of Matera. Just a 45-minute drive from Bari airport, you’ll behold a mesmerizing city. It feels like stepping back in time—way back. Known as the “City of the Sassi,” Matera is home to a series of ancient cave dwellings. Amazingly, they are carved directly into the mountainside. Moreover, its history stretches over 7,000 years! It’s no wonder that Matera is often described as one of the most unique and awe-inspiring cities in the world. If fact it is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Matera’s History Comes to Life

matera

Wandering through Matera’s narrow, winding streets, you can’t help but feel like you’re on the set of a historical movie. The homes, once humble dwellings for locals. They have been lovingly restored and now house chic boutique hotels, cozy restaurants, and charming cafes. You will find delightful nooks and crannies with charming venues boasting amazing views.

Matera’s stunning landscapes have played a starring role in many films. These include No Time to Die, Quantum of Solace, The Passion of the Christ, and Wonder Woman.

Why We Loved Matera

There’s something truly magical about Matera. Whether it’s breathtaking views, rich history, or amazing food, this city has a way of stealing your heart. Furthermore, the atmosphere feels timeless. You get the sense that you’re walking through a place that’s been shaped by the hands of generations before you.

Matera’s rise as a cultural hub is evident in the growing number of galleries, craft shops, and music festivals. Moreover, the people here are incredibly warm and welcoming. We absolutely loved Matera, and can’t wait to return!

In Matera, you’ll encounter a stunning bronze sculpture at nearly every turn. It is an image of a globe with an olive tree sprouting from its peak. This symbolizes peace and resilience. This iconic sculpture can be found throughout the city. The original stands proudly near the Church of San Francesco d’Assisi.

Matera: Exploring the Upper and Lower Sassi

Whether you’re wandering through the cobblestone streets of the Sassi Barisano (the upper part), or you’re descending to the Sassi Caveoso (the lower part), you’ll be captivated by Matera’s timeless beauty.

Matera

The Lower Sassi (Sassi Caveoso)

Sassi Caveoso is the older, more rugged side of Matera. Ancient, cave-like dwellings are still nestled into the rocky hillside. This beautiful city retains much of its raw, historic charm, waiting for us to explore. The streets here are winding and steep, and many of the original cave homes still stand. Indeed, Matera offers an intimate glimpse into life as it was centuries ago. In fact, we took a wonderful walking tour which includes entry into an original cave house.

The Upper Sassi (Sassi Barisano)

The more modern part of Matera is Sassi Barisano. It feels more polished, with wider streets and flat land. It boasts more shops, and greater accessibility. Nevertheless, it still retains a distinct charm, with stylish accommodations and trendy cafes.

The upper and lower parts of Matera are in walking distance of each other. Exploring both areas on foot is one of the highlights of visiting the city. The distance between the two parts isn’t far at all—just a few minutes by foot. But, you will be navigating some hills and staircases as you go.

Getting from the Upper to the Lower SassiHow Long Will It Take?

Walking from the top (Sassi Barisano) to the bottom (Sassi Caveoso) usually takes about 5 to 10 minutes, depending on your pace and how many photo stops you make along the way! It’s a great chance to take in the stunning architecture and landscape.

In essence, you’ll be doing a lot of walking. Nevertheless, the short distances and the beautiful surroundings make it a truly rewarding experience. The city’s compact size and unique layout mean you’ll always have something new to discover.

Matera, Italy Travel Tips

A referendum is in place to allow the Matera to officially become part of Puglia. It is now in the region of Basilicata, on the edge of Puglia.

  • Best Time to Visit: Spring and Fall are ideal for avoiding the summer heat, and the city is less crowded. However, Matera’s chilly months have a unique charm, with the mist rolling off the cliffs adding to its mystical aura.
  • Getting Around: While Matera is small, it’s hilly! Wear comfortable shoes for all the walking and stair-climbing you’ll be doing. A good pair of sneakers or sturdy sandals will go a long way.
  • Local Cuisine: Don’t miss trying Pane di Matera (Matera bread), a delicious, crusty bread unique to the region. Pair it with Caciocavallo (a local cheese) and some Lucanica sausage for a true taste of the area. Oh, and the focaccia—you’ll dream about it!
  • Stay in a Cave Hotel: For the ultimate Matera experience, book a night in a cave hotel. There are several charming options where you can sleep in a room carved right into the stone. These hotels offer a blend of ancient charm and modern luxury.

Ready to discover the magic of Matera? Pack your bags and let this ancient city with its stunning Sassi take your breath away! I really can’t wait to return!

Manduria Italy and the Wonderful Winery

Manduria Italy, a town in Puglia, has history, culture and most notably, exceptional wine. Located in the “heel” of Italy, Manduria boasts a rich agricultural heritage, with sun-drenched vineyards stretching across its fertile land. The small town itself is quiet during the day but lively at night. It offers a respite on the way to beaches or wineries. My feeling is that it will eventually grow to become a popular spot since it is right in the middle of Primitivo vineyards, olive oil production and the gorgeous natural beaches of Campomarino!

Alberobello the Alluring ‘Capital of the Trulli’

Alberobello, a place so unique it feels like stepping into a fairytale! This town is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is famous for its concentration of iconic, conical-roofed houses known as trulli. It’s a small, charming village with narrow lanes. Gently sloping hills add to its charm. It is one of the most popular destinations in Puglia. Alberobello draws visitors from all over to admire its distinctive cluster of picturesque trulli homes. For the best experience—and the best photos—visit early in the morning, when the streets are still quiet.

Great news! Neos Airlines is now running non-stop New York to Bari flights. Flights will operate from June till October.

Alberobello’s Magic Trulli

Alberobello Trulli

These distinctive dry-stone houses are built without mortar and topped with grey, cone-shaped roofs. These roofs are often painted with mysterious symbols. They are absolutely fascinating. The trulli date back to the 1400’s. You will see them sprinkled around Puglia, but Alberbello has the largest cluster. Due to their excellent condition and large amount, Alberobello Italy became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996. Trulli are built with stone only, no mortar. Therefore, a round structure is the best for self-support. The pointed roof supports itself atop the structure. The reason for not using mortar was to avoid paying taxes. Structures can easily be disassembled before the tax man came!
Note: Trulli = Plural | Trullo = Singular
